Do the Elephant Talk

You’re well on your way to perfecting your 60 Second Sell techniques and acing your next job interview. Now it’s time to focus on the next stage – your delivery.
Here’s another interviewing secret: it’s not what you say but how you say it that makes all the difference. The Elephant Talk will help you focus your delivery and perfect your 60 Second Sell. Here’s how:
First, practice by responding to the one question you’re interviewer is most likely to ask: “Tell me about yourself.”
Make your response memorable. Don’t start with the huge impact your grade six teacher had on you. Boring! Instead, pick the top three highlights of who you are and how they pertain to the job at hand.
Write out your answer in full – then get out the machete. Hack away at everything but the most vital points: What do you do now? What top three skills do you possess? How will you use them to get the job done? How have you done that in the past?
Here’s an example: “I’m from Toronto, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in biophysics. I spent ten years working with company 007, where I gained valuable experience in product development and management. I led a team that consistently out-produced and out-sold our competition for over six years. Now I’m excited about applying my sales and leadership skills to this position and successfully expanding the market for your company.”
Now go to mirror and pretend you’re addressing the interviewer and deliver your response. Aim to finish in 60 seconds. Think clean and crisp. Perfect and precise. A new Ferrari 612: whatever it takes to get you to perform like a race car – and not a milk wagon. How did you do?
Are you speeding up and stumbling on your words? Or are you rambling, searching for words and saying ‘um’ a lot? Don’t be too hard on yourself – this is no easy feat! It takes practice to perfect your delivery, especially if you’re going to nail it under stress. Here’s a trick that really works:
Imagine you’re a real hot-shot – or the most eloquent celebrity you admire. Now embody their most positive characteristics and try again. Keep practicing your Elephant Talk until your delivery is confident and flawless. Do this, and you’re soon guaranteed interview success!
