Interviewing Tips: What Interviewers Really Want to Know
Wouldn’t you love to know what’s running through your interviewer’s head? If you could read their thoughts (like the subtitles in Annie Hall), you’d know exactly what was going on – and ace the job interview. Think about it:
After speaking with more hiring managers than you can you can flick your Bic at, we all agree: an interview is nothing more than a meeting that is meant to flush out your weak points before they wreak havoc on the job. Bottom line: every single question an interviewer asks is really a polite way of asking “What’s wrong with you?”
Potential employers are all thinking: “What’s going to go wrong if I hire this person? Do they fit in? Can I be sure they’ll be productive on the job – or is there some tragic character flaw?”
Of course they’re looking for what’s right about you too – but the wrongs will outweigh the rights, big time – every time. You can have many positive attributes – but display just one or two negative ones, and you’ll be cast aside faster than you can say ‘unemployment line’.
Sound scary? It is – and so are job interviews. But they needn’t be – not if you prepare yourself sufficiently: that includes being realistic about what may be wrong with you. Be prepared to discuss any ‘issues’ you may have (being unemployed for an extended period of time) so should they get raised during the course of an interview (and they probably will be), if handled correctly, they won’t ruin your chances of getting hired.
Number 1 rule: in business, sports or in life, you’ve got to get into your opponent’s (interviewer’s) head if you want to gain an advantage. Though that may seem far-fetched in an interview, it’s not impossible. How?
It’s simple, actually: one of the basic laws of the universe is action-reaction: rather, certain actions will trigger equal and opposite reactions. If every one of your responses to an interviewer’s question is a killer 60 Second Sell or SOAR Sell, you can be pretty sure you’re going to ace your job interview – given you have addressed all the other requirements. That includes preparing your answers to tough questions about what may be wrong with you in the eyes of a potential employer.
