Positive Associations and the Job Interview
In last week’s episode, we talked about the fact that like attracts like. BE negative and you’ll attract negative people and negative events. Be positive and you’ll attract positive minded individuals and successful encounters, events – and job interviews. Let me explain:
In order to change how you do in job interviews, you need to change how you think and how you speak about them. According to Dr. Pascale Michelon, Ph. D., Cognitive Psychology, this is how it works: “Words in the brain are not stored randomly. They seem to be quite organized. Research has shown that words that are often heard together (such as salt and pepper) or words that share some meaning (such as nurse and doctor) are connected or ‘associated’ in the brain. Once you hear one, the other is activated.” Where am I going with this? Let me explain. How many of you have said to yourself or out loud, “I’m lousy at job interviews.” Or ‘I hate job interviews.” Or “Job Interviews scare me.” Everyone, right? If you haven’t, you wouldn’t be listening to this video. So let’s change that right now. If you speak words together, your brain will associate them when the concept comes up in the objective world. So let’s make some positive associations (mind-associations) of our own about job interviews, right now. This may feel a bit strange, but I promise you, it works! Repeat after me: “I’m BRILLIANT at job interviews.” “I am SUCCESSFUL in job interviews.” “I ENJOY job interviews.” “I CAN’T WAIT for my next job interview.” “I absolutely LOVE job interviews.”
Now that wasn’t so hard, was it? I hope you say it like you meant it, and as though anyone who heard you saying it would believe it! Making these kinds of positive associations in your brain will actually help you be more confident and relaxed about job interviewing – even if you’re not at all comfortable with it – by subconsciously rewiring your thought processes to support a more positive mind set. The key is to keep repeating that – out loud – whenever you can, with as much conviction as you can muster. Do this at least once a day – out loud – and especially before you do actually go into an job interview. You’ll be amazed at your new-found confidence and ease during your job interview.
