Positive Self Talk and Job Interviews

In the last video in this series, I also left you with a scenario where you’re about to get mowed down by a defenseman who wants to go through you and tear off your quarterback’s kneecaps… and what to do with the subsequent fear that arises – as it does in any job interviewing situation when you’re facing a slightly different, yet not any less scary behemoth. What to do? Well, that’s simple: Let’s take the example of personal fitness. We all know how hard it can be to redirect your thinking when it comes to it – because as we’ve all experienced, if you can’t wrap your head around exercising, you’re never going to do it. Much like job interviewing: if you can’t make it a positive learning experience, and take the focus off of how your ego will react to its outcome, then you’re pretty well toast before you’ve even walked in the door. Here’s what James S. Fell, Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist recommends: If you’re planning a run after work, don’t think, “Man, this day sucked. I don’t want to run today. I want potato chips”. Think, “Yes! I get to run after work. Awesome!”

He goes on to say he’s not a cheesy guy, and that he’d rather beat people over the head with scientific facts than make them feel warm and fuzzy with inspirational quotes. Still, there is one by Henry Ford that he feels is right on the money: “Whether you think you can – or think you can’t, you’re right.” Likewise, when it comes to job interviews, do the self awareness exercise we did in the “Raising Your Awareness” video part 1 and 2 over and over again until you can easily see yourself shining like a star and acing every single job interview. Now add the thought that you really could care less about its outcome – and treat your job interviews as a fun, learning experience where you get to blow some recruiter or hiring manager’s socks off with your incredible presence and confidence!

Of course, you DO care about the outcome – EVERYONE CARES – but it doesn’t have to be front and centre in your positive self talk. Here’s why: have you ever noticed how when you DON’T obsess about the outcome of something, you’re far more engaged and PRESENT in the moment – like at a party – when you see someone attractive across the room – your eyes meet for a brief second – they smile – you smile… and then what? Well, 99% of the time, the person you’ve spied will gravitate towards you – especially if you’re just THERE – and not projecting desperate – or needy in any way. If you project a fun, confident and positive attitude, without expectations, well – that’s when the magic happens! Likewise, in an job interview, of course you want to show that you can do the job better than anyone else: but I’ll tell you a secret: Assume you’ve already GOT the job, and check your ego at the door, and just keep asking yourself “DO I really WANT to work here?” Hmmm… If you do, you’ll project an almost irresistible kind of confidence. And here’s another secret about human nature: everyone wants something that’s just a little bit unavailable! So, practice running this scenario through your head OVER and OVER again… before you go to sleep, when you wake up – when you take a break, as you’re walking down the street… Remember, the bottom line is “You are what you THINK you are”. The more you THINK yourself in this positive light, the more likely you are to create this reality for yourself – and LAND THAT JOB. EVERY TIME!
